Hi Steve. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.
There is a new guided walk-through from Microsoft for repairing Windows Update that leads up to resetting components if necessary: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/.... Try running that first.
You can also install the Updates manually that fail to install which are logged at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Installed Update History, and then search for those to download and install from this Catalog: http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/sit...
If they continue to fail and interfere, then you can block them using one of these methods: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...
What I'd do at this point if you haven't yet is install latest Version 1803 by installing Media Creation Tool from this link and choose Upgrade This PC Now: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...
This is the most stable way to change to the newer version and because it reinstalls WIndows while keeping your files and programs in place, fixes most problems. It also brings all Windows Updates to date.
If there are any hurdles during install then these steps can overcome them: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...
Be aware that doing this Clean Install will also work in about 90% of cases to get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi,
Try using ISO file and if it fails let us know.

Please download Media Creation Tool from the link below and select Upgrade this PC at the first screen.

Downloading the ISO file
An ISO file is a digital or virtual replica of a physical disc. In order to use an ISO you must burn it to a optical disc. In the case of Windows 10, a blank Dual Layer DVD or an empty USB thumb drive. If you are using Windows 7, you can create the .ISO then burn it using the built in Disc Image utility. If you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can using a third party burning tool such as ImgBurn or Roxio/Nero.
Creating a .ISO file
For the purposes of this exercise, we are gonna use the .ISO option.
Select ISO file, then click Save, Select your location then click Save.
Wait while the .ISO image is created.
Performing the upgrade:
Once you have the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update ISO, you can double click it to mount it then start the upgrade. If you are installing from a DVD or USB thumb drive, insert or connect it, then click the on screen notification. If setup does not start automatically, click Start > File Explorer > This PC > open the drive containing the Windows 10 setup files, then double click Setup.exe.
Click Run setup.exe
Wait while setup is initialized.
You can select download and install any important updates before upgrading. This is recommended since it can help to ensure a smooth upgrade. If you are not connected to the Internet, select the Not right now radio box instead. Click Next.
Wait while Windows 10 setup checks your system for compatibility issues.
Accept the End User License Agreement.

Hi Steverid,
With these major upgrades, the most successful method is to upgrade from the Windows 10 ISO - you download the ISO and then perform an Offline Upgrade
Click this link:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...
to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), then choose ISO
When the ISO file completes downloading
Disconnect from the Internet
Uninstall any 3rd party Anti-virus - this is a known issue with 1803
Then, double click it and then run Setup.exe to begin the upgrade . . .

specifically here is what update says
do the numbers in parenthesis mean something? Does Microsoft get feedback from this failed process so they can fix it? When Windows 10 came up I had multiple failures to install despite repeated Microsoft free help for hours at a time. Eventually Microsoft fixed something after a few months and it installed, so I can just wait to see if they eventually will fix this issue.
Also, I only use Word, Excel, Photo app, and a browser. I do not need any features in the new update, I do not use Cortana, anything 3D, etc.
So I do not want to go through a long and potentially painful process that may not work anyway to acquire something I do not need. Microsoft needs top fix their update process because that is the mechanism for getting updates??
Thanks

OK so I turned off Windows update by saying my Wifi connection was "metered" That stopped it from continuing to try to download install the update. On August 30th I saw there was an additional Windows update that said it fixed issues with the update process so I turned off "metered" connection and selected run updates. This time the update process correctly installed spring update V 1803.
So I just waited out Microsoft until they were able to fix the process and the update.

None of these suggestions works for me.
I now receive error code (0x80070422) whenever I try to update the computer. Windows 10 has been a complete disaster as far as I am concerned and I have wasted so much time and effort trying to sort it our. Microsoft are a waste of space. As soon as I can I am going to uninstall windows 10 and reinstall windows 8.

I have waited for five hours and ABORTED the ISO 1803 file. It hangs up at 25%.
EVEN THE ABORT function fails and HANGS UP (meaning, when I CANCEL the ISO load, IT fails).
Pretty much everything about Windows 10 updates to the April edition are failing, and there are thousands of websites pretty much suggesting that I try an ISO load of the entire op system.
This is such an incredibly ridiculous mess that it reminds me of the Windows 95 days when BSOD's were an everyday occurrence and Bill was still around then.
I never expected Microsoft to load down our PC's with so many garbage apps that it appears that this may be an issue. I am guessing here.
I have read that there are so many PC's with varying configs that this may be an issue. I however cannot believe that because Windows 7 was the GRANDEST ever OS, with rarely an issue if ever.
This makes me believe that they are releasing updates which are wreaking havoc. I do not wish to do business with Apple or Google. Android is not much better, but at least it updates on my Phone.
Mr. Softie, please help us fix this mess!
DJ
